What Are Ulcers?
Ulcers are the raw and sore patches formed in the stomach lining or in the duodenum- the upper part of the intestine. Ulcers which are caused in the stomach are referred as gastric ulcers while the ones popping in the duodenum are called duodenal ulcers. However, both are collectively known as peptic ulcers.

What Causes Ulcers?
Ulcers are often linked with acidic foods and for a long time, doctors actually thought that stress and specific foods were the only causes of an ulcer. However, the prime reasons for the ulcers to occur are either the infection caused by the bacterium- Helicobacter Pylori or overuse of NSAIDs such as aspirin and ibuprofen.
In both the cases, the mucus barrier which shields the stomach and duodenum from the gushing of digestive acids is damaged. The enzymes of these acids start to eat away the tissues of the unshielded areas causing ulcers.
Treatment Of Ulcers
Untreated ulcers can cause discomfort in your living by causing after effects such as bleeding, swelling, and scarring. If you in any case ignore the existence of these ulcers, there is a fair chance that they might gnaw on the stomach and duodenum lining. Several bacteria and undigested food might escape from the gap that this ulcers create and enter the body cavity giving you a life-threatening condition- Peritonitis.
Thus it is essential that you take all the necessary precautions including anti-ulcer drugs that your doctors may prescribe. You can also with the natural alternatives simultaneously to improve your condition.
Here are the three types of anti-ulcer drugs:
H2 Blockers: This is rather a short term treatment usually prescribed for a heartburn. Medications consisting H2 blockers target the parietal cells on the stomach lining as its course of action. The parietal cells produce acid on its stimulation by various stimulants and one of them is histamine which binds with the H2 receptors of the parietal cells. H2 blockers don’t let histamine bind with the receptors which in turn reduces the acid production.
PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitors): There are a certain cells in the stomach which consists Proton Pump in its molecular structure. As the name suggests, this molecule ‘pumps’ out the potassium ion (non-acidic in nature) and replaces with a hydrogen ion (acidic). As more hydrogen ions replace potassium, the stomach becomes an acidic pit. Proton Pump Inhibitors stops this pumping procedure and thus blocks these cells from producing more acid.
Mucosal Protective Meds: The digestion process involves severely acidic juices which if introduced to the stomach lining can cause ulcers. Mucosal protective medications creates a wall (or say, a barrier), that blocks the entry of these acids and let the ulcers heal.
These are the traditional meds which are usually the choice of prescription for such an issue. There are natural bases as well that could cover your stomach issues.
